There's no secret tactic that grows a cosmetic practice. Strategy is the what and why, tactics are the how, and neither matters if nothing gets done.

Episode Transcript

There are a lot of ways to grow a cosmetic practice. There’s only one way to fail at it: not getting shit done.

I see doctors make this mistake over and over. They go to a conference, come back energized, and dump everything they learned on their employees’ desks. New tactics, new tricks, new tools, the latest offer. They make it somebody else’s problem. And the end result is that nothing ever gets done.

This episode is about breaking that cycle: understanding the difference between strategy and tactics, picking what you can actually be best at, and then doing the work.

Key Takeaways

  • There is no silver bullet, no magic wand, no secret tactic. Anyone selling you one is selling you.
  • Strategy is the what and the why. Tactics are the how. Confusing them is why conference notes die on desks.
  • Figure out what your practice can be best at, and make sure the market actually wants it.
  • Every tactic has a cost: money, time, emotional energy. "Free" channels still bill you.
  • Tactics and strategy without action still equal failure. Progress, not activity, is the goal.

Why This Matters Now

The silver bullets change costumes every few years. This episode is from 2020 and nothing about the disease has changed, only the symptoms. Today the shiny object is an AI tool or whatever went viral last month. The pattern is identical: a new toy promises to skip the work, doctors chase it, nothing compounds. The practices that grow pick a strategy, pick the tactics that serve it, and execute for years. If you keep collecting tactics without a strategy to hang them on, that’s the exact problem our advisory work exists to fix.

The Only Way to Fail

“Not getting shit done. That’s it.”

Doctors come back from conferences with a thousand ideas and hand them off like homework. Nobody owns them. Nobody sequences them. Six months later the practice looks exactly the same, minus the conference fees.

The Myth of the Silver Bullet

Here’s the truth about growing cosmetic practices. There is no silver bullet. There’s no magic wand.

“There is no silver bullet. There’s no magic wand.”

There’s no secret tactic. Nobody’s reinventing the wheel. Nobody’s coming up with anything so magical that it catapults your practice into the stratosphere. It doesn’t exist, and the people claiming otherwise are usually charging for the claim.

Strategy vs Tactics

We’ve covered strategy and tactics in previous episodes, but it merits going over again.

Strategy is the what and the why. What do you want to do? I want to take the beachhead. I want the biggest Botox and non-surgical practice in my city. Fine, that’s the what. Now why do you want it? The why is what keeps you executing when the tactic gets boring, and every tactic gets boring.

Running in Circles Isn’t Running Forward

If you have tactics and strategy without action, you’re also destined to fail. Paralysis by analysis, coming back with a thousand tactics and no idea why you’d implement any of them, is just motion.

“Running around in the circle is not the same as running forward.”

I’ve said it before and I say it in my book: activity does not equal progress. You’re after progress. I wrote a whole article on this exact disease: it’s not about aiming your gun, it’s about pulling the f’ing trigger.

The Five Ways to Grow a Cosmetic Practice

You should eventually be doing some of all of these, but I’ve grown practices on just one, and I have clients right now running a single strategy that works fine:

  1. Social media
  2. Direct-to-consumer advertising
  3. Content creation and SEO
  4. Reviews and influencers
  5. Public relations

Pick based on what you can be best at and what your market wants, not on what’s trending. The full decision method is in our practice growth framework.

Every Tactic Has a Price

“There is a cost to any tactic. It can be financial, it can be time, it can be emotional and spiritual.”

Don’t jump on the latest bandwagon because it looks free and cheap. It isn’t. Even when you pay staff or an agency to run it, you still pay: in money, in attention, in the opportunity you didn’t pursue instead.
